Why Are We Here?

Why are we here?

Nope, I’m not going to tackle our purpose for existing. Sorry to disappoint.

But I do want to share something else with you: my vision for {re}made by hand.

Why I Started {re}made by hand

I started this site because I realized:

Life is short. This is it. And the moments we allow to slip by unnoticed are all we have in which to make a difference — to ourselves, to others, to the world. There are things I want to do, things I’ve been putting off or avoiding or scared to try. I don’t want to look back at the end of my life and see decades littered with regrets. I want to start doing the things I’ve always meant to do and being the person I want to be.

I quickly realized I am not the only one at this point, with these beliefs, ready to step up and start living.

And thus, {re}made by hand was born. It’s based on the concept of remakeability — that you can take the raw materials of your life, your experiences, your personality and abilities, and use them to remake yourself into the version of yourself you want to be.

And I bet you’re here because some part of this philosophy resonates with you.

My Vision for This Community

I have a vision for {re}made by hand of a place where remakeables around the world can gather, share stories, inspire and be inspired, encourage and be encouraged. I want all to feel welcome, to feel supported, to feel accepted. I want us to walk our separate paths toward our dreams together.

{re}made by hand will always be about the journey. I will never be the expert, dispensing advice from my ivory tower. To do so would mean I’ve stopped growing, stopped evolving — and that is something I never intend to do.

I want to get to know you, through comments and emails and social media, if you want that, too. (I’m friendly, I promise!) I want you to get to know one another, too, by conversing in the comments and reaching out as you feel comfortable. There are some amazing people in this fledgling community already.

I hope this vision jives with the reasons you stop by this corner if the Internet. I hope you make it your own. I hope we can build this community together.

What I’m Working On

I’ve been working on some things I hope will help to build our remakeable community, and I’ll keep working! Here’s what I’ve been up to:

A Newsletter!

There is now a {re}made by hand newsletter! Think of it less as “tips and tricks” and more “emails from a friend,” a way to keep in touch. I share my thoughts and reflections, things a little less structured and sometimes more personal than what I share on the blog.

It goes out on Mondays and is 100% free. You can sign up here, or use the form in the sidebar.

A Better Comment System!

As an experiment, I’ve installed a system called Livefyre. You’ll see it when you get to the end of the post. My intent in doing so is to foster conversation.

If you’re unfamiliar with Livefyre, here’s what’s cool. You can still comment with your name and email, but now you can use Twitter, Facebook, Google+, or LinkedIn to log in as well. You can also sign up for a free Livefyre account, which you can use on any site with comments run by Livefyre. That lets you choose to receive an email when someone replies to your comment or mentions you in a comment.

I would love to hear your feedback!

A Mystery Project!

And for a little intrigue, I’ll tell you that I have another project in the works that you will hear about in the upcoming months!

Your Turn

This {re}made by hand community is yours as much as it is mine. If you have suggestions or feedback, please get in touch! We can only make this community soar together.

I’d also love it if you would introduce yourself, either in the comments or by any of the methods available in the sidebar. And if you know someone who belongs in our community, would you invite them to stop by? Let’s get this thing rolling!

Thirty years ago when I was carving out a career, a much older and wiser mentor told me "This is not a rehearsal". How right he was. Do it now!

My Internet searches keep bringing me back here :) After years of just going through the motions, waiting for life to suddenly happen, I am beggining to "wake up" and realize that life is now, in this very moment, and there is a yearning deep within me to reach for my full potential and build something. Chronic negative thinking, bad habits, and self doubts are obstacles that I am finding hard to move past, but my eyes are opened now and I could never go back. I look forward to reading more of your blog in the future. Thanks for sharing your journey with us.

@Dave It makes me happy to hear that! I hope your searches brought you to the right place (or one of many!). It sounds like you and I hit really similar points. I could never go back, either. I'd love to hear your story. I'm excited you found your way over here and look forward to having you as part of the community :)

I started my creative business adventure after a 'mid life major re-assessment' as I like to call it. I didn't want to continue living my life with the saying "I always wanted to do that". I didn't want to keep watching other people living 'my dream'. I wanted to live it. So here I am, taking steps to make my dream life a reality.

I am sure there are many of us out here - maybe feeling like we are the only one, because we don't know anyone in our circle at this same point in their lives.

I love that you won't be dispensing advice from your ivory tower. - there are some people I subscribe to can be a bit "I know something you don't know na na n na". I am working on launching my own newsletter at the moment and trying to work out how not to sound like a smarty pants.

So nice to hear more about your WHY. Why you started your site and where you hope to take it. XO

CWBusiness We started our projects from similar a-ha realizations :) Part of what I want this community to be about is people hitting a certain point in their lives -- a place for them to come together. Hopefully it is (or will start!) feeling like that.

I know those people, too. I'm actually working on unsubscribing, because while their content might be good, it's static. I'm drawn to people who keep on evolving.

I hope your newsletter launch goes well! You don't strike me as one of those "na na na" type people, so I bet you will be fine :)

I like the idea of remaking yourself with what you already have...just rearrange things a bit.  For me at the age of 50, after children and grandchildren, it's just me and my hubs now and I love the ideas of minimalism, simplicity, and downsizing to help us grow into the spiritual beings we are meant to be.  We gave our house to our son and his family and moved into a 500 sq ft loft apartment right on the river...its like a dream come true.  Hubs is retired but I am in the need of remaking how to make money with something I am passionate about (I won't call it a career because I loathe the ideas of materialism, consumer culture and being a slave to the "man").   I have a part-time job at the local community college assisting disabled students in class.  I LOVE my little job outside of the home, but I feel the need to do more.  This is what I struggle with.  I have so many different ideas twirling around in my head!  Thank you for your suggestions.  I will definitely sit down and use them as guidelines to figure this all out.

Lavender Wow, beautiful! You're really living your remakeable journey. That's awesome! I feel like you're definitely on the right track and wish you luck pinning down those whirling ideas. If you need to bounce some of them off someone, let me know :)

I loved this post but I'll admit I'm a bit baffled by the commenting system - perhaps I'm alone in this?

@EverydaySpiritualWisdom Oh no, that's not what I want! Can I help you feel more comfortable using it? I'd be happy to help out if I can. I don't want people to feel alienated or confused by it. If {rbh} readers don't like it, I'll go back to the old system!

(Happy you liked the post, though :)

I loved this post because well.... It just gives me the warm fuzzies lol. I love the idea of creating a new you, not from strange and foreign material, but by rearranging and reorganizing what is already a part of you. Nothing is new, but it's a new way of looking at the same thing. And I love that approach!
