Knit 1 Below (k1-below)

With the k1-below, you knit into the row below the live stitches on your left-hand needle instead of into the live stitches themselves. This stitch can also be worked into a yarn over, which results in a larger hole without the added stitch created by a double yarn over. The yarn-over variant is the one most often used in RBH patterns.

To work a k1-below into a yarn over, instead of inserting your right-hand needle tip into the next stitch on your needle, insert it from front to back into the yarn over one row directly below the stitch on your needle. Knit this stitch as you normally would and slide the one above it off the left-hand needle. Both the yarn over and the stitch above it will be caught by the new stitch.

The following video demonstrates how to work a k1-below into a regular stitch. Working it into a yarn over is easier, as you can see the hole where the needle goes, but the idea is the same.
