Meet the Chevronelle Cowl:

Blending stand-out bands of mosaic with simple lace, Chevronelle provides enough variation to hold your interest while still being easier to knit than it looks. The mosaic sections double as transitions between colors, so you can show off a handful of your favorites instead of being stuck with a single main color.

Chevronelle is knit flat and joined at the end. The panel setup makes the cowl’s size easy to customize; adjusting the circumference simple, as is creating a wider or narrower cowl, and the pattern includes a note about how to do both. It also includes instructions for two joining methods: grafting and the three-needle bind-off.

Lace is both written and charted, and Chevronelle has been tech edited and test knit, so you can cast on with confidence

YARN 
127 yd / 116 m each of four different fingering weight yarns. Totals include a 15% buffer.

— C1: Blue Skin Yarns Rosamunde (80% Merino, 10% Cashmere, 10% Nylon; 435 yd / 398 m per 100 g / 3.53 oz skein), 1 skein; shown in Bitterblue 
— C2, C3, C4: Madelinetosh 80/10/10 Fingering (80% Merino, 10% Cashmere, 10% Nylon; 405 yd / 370 m per 115 g / 4 oz skein), 1 skein each; shown in Antique Lace, Depth, and Tidal Basin. (This yarn has been discontinued as of the writing of this pattern, but any yarn of similar makeup and yardage will work in its place.)

NEEDLES 
US 4 3.5 mm circular needles, or size needed to obtain gauge

Second set of needles in a similar size for joining; note that while you may use alternate needle configurations for joining, the pattern is written assuming two pairs of needles

Optional: Additional needle (circular, straight, or DPN) of the same or similar size if using three-needle bind-off. You may also use the non-working end of one of the pairs holding the live stitches if you’re using this setup. The extra needle is not necessary if you will be grafting the cowl.

NOTIONS 
Waste yarn, crochet hook of similar size to your needles, tapestry needle

GAUGE 
20.5 stitches and 30.5 rows = 4” / 10 cm in stockinette stitch after firm blocking. Gauge is not crucial but will affect yardage used and final dimensions.

TECHNIQUES 
Single and double decreases, yarn overs, mosaic knitting, provisional cast-on, grafting OR three-needle bind-off. Pattern includes links to more information about required stitches and techniques.
